Dress Code

The following is the official dress code for Southview Christian School. All students and those involved with the school are required to follow these guidelines during all official school functions and whenever representing Southview Christian School.

Dress Code

Students are expected to dress neatly, cleanly, and modestly. The dress code applies to ALL school functions and school-related activities. Students must be in SCS dress code when attending driver's education courses or elective courses at other schools.

General Guidelines

The administration of Southview Christian School reserves the right to determine what is appropriate for school wear. The following guidelines are for all students.

Outdoor Clothing and Headwear

Outerwear intended for cold or rainy weather may not be worn in the classroom during the school day. No hats or head coverings may be worn on campus during the school day. However, the K3-5th grade may wear a winter hat to recess. No hoodies are allowed on campus during the school day.

Smart Watches

Apple watches or any other type of smartwatch may not be worn to school or taken on school outings or activities.

Spirit Day Friday

To encourage Conqueror pride among our students and staff, every Friday will be Spirit Day Friday. Students may wear Southview or school color tops with denim bottoms (pants for boys; skirts for girls). Denim clothing cannot be torn or faded. All other school dress guidelines still apply.

Spirit Week

During the week of Homecoming, Southview will have Spirit Week. Each day will have a theme chosen by the senior class and approved by the administration.  This will allow students to dress up in costumes to match the theme. Detailed guidelines will be made available to parents and students in advance of Spirit Week.

Formal Dress

For formal school events, guidelines will be made available through the school office. Male and female students will be required to have their formal wear checked before events like the high school banquet and homecoming. Noncompliance will disallow participation.

Picture Days

For Fall term yearbook pictures, student attire must adhere to the school dress code. Additional individual pictures may be offered in the Spring term to allow students to dress up beyond the typical guidelines.

Athletic Dress Guidelines

Although participation in team sports is voluntary, all 7th-9th grade students must take physical education. In both cases, a T-shirt, athletic shorts, and athletic shoes are required for participation.

Crew neck T-shirts with Southview logos or that are solid colored may be worn. Any color but white is allowed. Shirts should be clean and loose-fitting without holes or stains. No sleeveless or cut-off shirts. At no time should cleavage, midriff, back, or undergarments be exposed. Athletic shorts should be loose and extend to the middle of the knee when standing or sitting.

Students who fail to bring their change of clothes or wear appropriate clothing 1) for class will lose points from their grades or 2) for team practices will lose playtime on the court or field. Repeated infractions may result in disciplinary action, up to or including removal from a team.

Parents' Dress Guidelines

Parents are asked to dress appropriately when visiting our school or attending school functions. We ask that parents conform to the general guidelines of modesty and appropriateness to which our students adhere while enrolled. These standards must be followed for special events such as school parties, field day events, field trips, etc.

Dress Code Violations

When a student’s attire does not fit school guidelines, parents may be contacted to bring a change of clothing or the student may be sent home to change. Repeated non-compliance may result in disciplinary action.

Recognizing that God made people as one of two biological sexes, the following are more specific guidelines for male and female students.

Boys

Male students are expected to wear business-casual attire. This means a shirt, pants, belt, socks, and approved shoes. The following guidelines provide more detail.

Shirts

All shirts must be polo-style or button-up in solid color or stripes. Only the top button may be open. Shirts must be tucked in and long enough to remain tucked in when raising hands over the head. Shirts may display a Southview or a small manufacturer’s logo. Solid-colored or striped sweaters, zip-up pullovers, or sweatshirts without graphics may be worn over a collared shirt. No hoodies of any kind are permitted.

Pants

Boys may wear dress slacks or business casual pants (khakis, Dockers, etc.) in any solid color. Pants should be modestly loose, not baggy, tight (slim fit or skinny style), or worn below the waist. The length should come at least to the ankle when seated. The cuff may not be gathered like joggers or sweatpants. Preschool through 3rd-grade boys are not required to wear a belt when wearing pull-on elastic waist pants.

Shoes

Shoes should always be worn and may be dress or casual dress, including dress boots. Shoes must fit properly, not loose enough to fall off the heel when walking. Heels should not exceed 1 inch in height. High-top shoes, hiking boots, work boots, flip-flops, Crocs (or any other full rubber shoe), or sandals are not permitted. Tennis shoes/sneakers must be fully laced and/or secured. No light-up or wheeled shoes are allowed.

Hair

Boys are to have short, well-groomed hairstyles. Hair must not be able to touch the eyebrows, ears, or collar in the back. Hair should not be unusually thick or bushy. Sideburns must not be longer than the bottom of the earlobe. Faddish or eccentric haircuts are not permitted. Shaved or partially shaved hairstyles are not acceptable, including any designs.

If a haircut reminder is given, a student has until the next Monday to get a haircut. Students who do not get a haircut within that timeframe may not be allowed to attend classes until the hair complies with school standards.

Facial Hair

No beards or mustaches are permitted. Students must be clean-shaven regardless of age/grade. Should a student come to school unshaven, the student may be required to shave with a school-provided disposable shaver before being allowed to return to class.

Accessories

Boys are disallowed from wearing accessories traditionally associated with ladies’ jewelry. The only rings allowed are class rings. Necklaces are not allowed to be worn visibly outside of the shirt on school grounds or at school events on or off campus. Boys may wear a watch, a fitness tracker, or a medical ID bracelet but no other wrist-worn jewelry. No earrings, body piercings, gauges, bars, or chains are allowed.

Girls

All items of clothing must be worn modestly and appropriately. Clothing should not be dirty, ripped, torn, or faded.

Shirts and Tops

Shirts or tops may be polo-style, button-up, or collarless with sleeves in solid color, stripe, or small print (i.e., floral, stripes, polka dots, etc.), but should not have graphics or text. Only the top button of polos or button-up shirts may be open. Girls may leave their shirts untucked provided they keep a neat appearance. Shirts should be long enough that when raising hands over the head, the midriff remains covered. Shirts may display a Southview logo or a small manufacturer’s logo. Solid-colored or striped sweaters, zip-up pullovers, or sweatshirts may be worn over a collared shirt.

Dresses and Skirts

All dresses and skirts should be dress-casual and should reach the bottom of the knee (in front and in back, including slits) when standing or sitting. Skirts/dresses may be solid-colored, striped, or small print without graphics or text. Sleeveless or strapped dresses must be worn with a sweater or jacket (not an outdoor jacket) to keep the shoulder area covered. Camisoles or tank tops may be worn under a dress as a modesty shield if the dress is low cut. Undergarments should not be visible, and no cleavage should be seen at any time.

K3 – 5th-grade girls are required to wear mid-thigh "bike" style shorts under their skirts at all times for modesty. They also have the option to wear scooters/skorts as long as they come to the bottom of the knee when standing or sitting.

Leggings

Wearing leggings under skirts is allowed. The proper length of the skirt must be maintained. Leggings should be solid-colored.

Shoes

Shoes should always be worn and may be dress or casual dress. Shoes must fit properly, not loose enough to fall off the heel when walking. Heels should not exceed 1 inch in height. Tennis shoes/sneakers must be fully laced and/or secured. Sandals may be worn provided the upper strap covers most of the top of the foot and has a secure ankle strap. Flip-flops and Crocs (or any other full rubber shoe) may not be worn. No light-up or wheeled shoes are allowed.

Hair

Only natural coloring and highlighting are allowed. No faddish or extreme hairstyles.

Accessories

All jewelry should be worn in good taste. Girls are allowed to wear up to two necklaces. They are allowed a maximum of two pairs of earrings in their earlobes. The same number of earrings must be in each ear. No body piercings, gauges, bars, or chains. Girls may wear bracelets (two per arm maximum), a watch, a fitness tracker, or a medical ID bracelet.

THE BOTTOM LINE: Look Neat and Sharp at All Times!

IMPORTANT: This dress code is NOT OPTIONAL. Students who arrive at school without proper attire will receive disciplinary action. The school office will call the parents to bring appropriate clothes to the school so the student can change. Repeated violations will result in more severe consequences (See Disciplinary System). The Administrator must approve any questionable items. Please bring questionable things to the Administrator for approval before wearing them.

Previously purchased uniform clothing will be permitted as long as the clothing meets dress code standards in both appearance and length.
